Apple was slow to ship features it eventually needed. The first iPhone had no copy and paste, no multitasking and no way to install third-party apps. Copy and paste did not arrive until 2009. Apple treated Siri as a defensive feature bundled into every iPhone rather than a product it invested in aggressively, and users noticed the gap every time a simple voice command failed on an iPhone but worked on a competing device.
